About the program
Journey into the misty hills of Kalimpong, where centuries-old Lepcha and Bhutia food traditions are still cooked over wood fires and passed down through oral memory rather than recipe books. As a Culture Compass volunteer, you’ll work alongside local home cooks, foragers, and community elders to document indigenous ingredients, fermentation techniques, and forgotten recipes before they fade. Your writing and research will directly feed into a growing culinary archive — helping preserve identity, support local food entrepreneurs, and bring global recognition to a cuisine the world rarely sees. This is heritage work with lasting, tangible impact.
7:00 AM – Wake up, light breakfast with host family (often local Himalayan staples)
8:30 AM – Team briefing: assign interviews, documentation goals, or field visits for the day
9:30 AM – Field visit to a local home, farm, or market for interviews/observation
12:30 PM – Shared community lunch, often cooked with ingredients discussed that morning
1:30 PM – Documentation time: writing up notes, organizing photos, structuring recipes
3:30 PM – Hands-on cooking or foraging session with a local host/mentor
5:30 PM – Free time to explore surroundings, journal, or rest
7:00 PM – Group dinner and informal cultural exchange/storytelling
8:30 PM onward – Optional group reflection or free evening
